Illinois-Bred The Pizza Man Tops Field for $200,000 Wise Dan Stakes
On Saturday at Churchill Downs, the track will host the $200,000 Wise Dan Stakes. The Grade 2 event was formerly known as the Firecracker Stakes and was won by the two-time Horse of the Year in both 2011 and 2013. The mile and a sixteenth turf race has drawn a field of eleven.
The Pizza Man has been installed as the heavy favorite at odds of 6-5 on the morning line for trainer Roger Brueggemann. Bred and owned by Midwest Thoroughbreds, the veteran seven-year-old gelded son of English Channel is a sixteen-time winner. He has been freshened since an uncharacteristically poor performance in the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap (G1) in February and has been training forwardly for his return to the races. Florent Geroux will be aboard from post position two.
Conquest Typhoon trying to improve
Second choice at morning line odds of 6-1 is Conquest Typhoon, one of two horses in the race for trainer Mark Casse. A four-year-old son of Stormy Atlantic, he was purchased for $330,000 as a yearling and has won three of his fourteen starts. He was named Canada’s champion two-year-old in 2014 but will be trying to return to form after a pair of fifth-place finishes against graded stakes company. Joe Bravo will be in the irons from post position five.
Step up in class for Granny's Kitten
Also in the field at morning line odds of 12-1 is Granny’s Kitten for trainer Michael Maker. A homebred for Ken and Sarah Ramsey, the four-year-old son of Kitten’s Joy has been on the board in half of his ten starts and is trying to earn his fourth career victory. He is stepping back up in class after winning an allowance race at Keeneland and will be trying to notch his first stakes win. Gary Stevens has the mount from post three.
