A couple of familiar names from the Triple Crown trail have drawn into the 2016 Secretariat Stakes, but the lesser known Beach Patrol leads the field at 2-1 ML odds.
Chad Brown's Beach Patrol will be looking for his first win at the graded-stakes level, having been in the money in two of three stakes tries, including a third-place showing last out against a very good field in the Belmont Derby Invitational, finishing well after running wide throughout. The winner of that one will run later on the card in the Arlington Million.
There are others who are in with a shot here, however, including Long Island Sound (5-2), a Kentucky-bred who started his career in Ireland with three straight wins, but who came up short in his US debut in that same race as Beach Patrol, finishing sixth as the post-time favorite. The late running One Mean Man (12-1) is a horse that has improved with experience, and most recently won over the Arlington turf in the (G3) American Derby, and who should appreciate the added distance he'll get here. Finishing just ahead of Long Island Sound in the Belmont Invitational at 25-1 was Surgical Strike (9-2) who needs to take another step forward to get on the ticket with these.
The Secretariat Stakes goes Saturday, August 13 from Arlington Park. Post time is 4:43 PM Eastern.
