Smitty's Cougar Facing Eight Rivals in $100,000 Azalea Stakes
On Friday at Delta Downs, the featured race is the $100,000 Azalea Stakes. Restricted to three-year-old fillies bred in Louisiana, the race will be contested at seven and a half furlongs and has drawn a field of nine.
Smitty’s Cougar headlines the competitive field as the morning line favorite at odds of 8-5 for trainer Ron Faucheux. Bred and owned by Roger Smith, the chestnut filly is by Half Ours and has been on the board in all six starts. She will be trying to earn her fifth career victory and is coming into this race off of two straight wins against state-bred stakes competition. Richard Eramia will be in the irons and they will break from the rail.
Jet Black Magic already a graded stakes winner
Second choice at morning line odds of 2-1 is Jet Black Magic for trainer W. Bret Calhoun. A dark bay daughter of Hold Me Back, she has two wins from six starts and has never been worse than third. Her biggest victory came in the Delta Downs Princess Stakes (G3) as a juvenile and she was last seen finishing second behind Smitty’s Cougar. Colby Hernandez will be aboard and they will break from post position seven.
Sophomore debut for Thegoodwitch
Also in the field at morning line odds of 8-1 is Thegoodwitch for trainer Albert Stall, Jr. A bay daughter of My Pal Charlie, she will be making the first start of her three-year-old season and will be trying to earn her first stakes victory. She broke her maiden at first asking at Fair Grounds and followed that up with a runner-up effort in the Louisiana Futurity. C.J. McMahon will be aboard and they will break from post position four.
